#18 The Finish Line is in Sight

5/9/11

The nice weather is here at last.  It is amazing how much more energy you have when it is sunny and warm outside.  Summer break is just around the corner.

Sounds like you guys have been busy!  I was talking to my friend Jaxson last night (he is 8 years old), and he is in the middle of the Wayside School book right now.  He says that in some parts he can’t stop laughing.  Hopefully all of you got good reports from your parents at Open House.

Wow, there are all kinds of cooks in your class.  I should have hired a few of you to be the personal cooks at Palisades apartment #601.  That would have been a nice birthday present for Messy Moffitt or Beardman.  It would be a full-time job though because all three of us can eat a lot of food.

I hope all of you are making Gokul feel welcome in his new environment.  I wonder what sports or hobbies they do in India?

I just finished my last college assignment three days ago.  Whoo-hoo!  It seems like yesterday I was walking nervously into my first college class.  That was five years ago.  Seems like a long time, but it went by really fast.  Even though it is an awesome feeling to be done, it is also sad.  The last five years were the most fun of my life.  In that time period, I met friends that I will have for the rest of my life and will have memories that will last a lifetime.  And after taking over 50 classes, I would like to think that I am a lot wiser now than I was when I entered the University of Wisconsin.

I can sit here now and tell you all that college is awesome!  Each and every one of you should work hard in school so that you can experience it.  And it does not have to be at the University of Wisconsin.  There are colleges everywhere, big and small, near and far, that all offer a great learning and growing experience.  Develop good work skills now — like listening to your teachers and doing quality work — and you will set yourself up to get into the college of your choice.  Every day matters.   Read more >>

#17 Work Before Play

Apr 21, 2011   //   by Tolzien   //   Weekly Updates  //  Comments Off on #17 Work Before Play

4/21/11

It was mentioned in your last email to me that a lot of you guys are extremely busy with schoolwork and spring sports starting up.  You said that the sports and nice weather are making it hard to stay inside and concentrate on schoolwork.  I feel the same way every spring!  It is so hard to focus when you have been sitting inside all winter and all of a sudden you start seeing the sun again.  All you want to do is get outside and play.  If it weren’t for my parents, that is exactly what I would have done.  The problem was that my parents always made sure that my homework was completely finished (not half-finished) before I could go outside and play with my brothers and friends.  When I was your age, this did not make any sense to me.  But now I realize what my parents were training me for.  Now that I am in college and have football practice or workouts every day, it is a habit for me to get my homework finished before I go play.  If I only focused on practining football and playing, I would drown in school work over time and my grades would suffer because of it.

The reason I am telling you guys this is because you need to start practicing good sudy habits now so that when you get to high school and college you are not overwhelmed with homework.  Sometimes in high school and college you may have two hours of homework in one night!  If you procrastinate, or delay doing your homework, you won’t get to bed until past midnight and chances are that you will be rushing through your work.  It won’t be quality work like your teachers expect.  Does anyone get what the moral of the story is?  The moral is to get your work done before you go play.  Work Before Play. Well, first I think we should honor this post because it is #16, the best number in the world!  Why aren’t any numbers as cool as 16?

Christmas Card 2010

That is pretty neat that you all got to meet my mom.  Was she very talkative?  Sometimes my dad tells her that she talks too much. My mom is right about Messy Moffitt and Beardman eating all the food.  Sometimes I hide food in the bottom container of the refridgerator so that there is some left for me.  I also found out that they don’t eat apples, so I always make sure that I have a few of those in the fridge so that I don’t starve.

I actually have not seen Dairy of a Wimpy Kid – Roderick Rules.  Did a lot of the boys go take their girlfriends to see it??

I think it is really cool that you are learning about animals and their habitats.  My favorite three animals when I was younger were dogs, wolves, and hawks.  I remember reading books  to learn all about them.  Like we talked about, make sure you pay attention when you learn how to use PowerPoint because it is a very important tool in high school and college.  If you master it now, you will be an expert down the road and all your classmates will be jealous of you. #15 Thank You

4/4/11

First thing’s first…How was Spring Break?  Did any of you go anywhere warm?  Did anyone leave Illinois? Hopefully everyone got a chance to get away from class work for a little bit.  Now it’s time to get back to work.

I went back to Califonia for my Spring Break to train again.  I was there for two weeks and it actually was cloudy and chilly for most of the time…bummer.  While I was busy for most days, I did go to two college basketball tournament games that were being played nearby.  I also went to the beach one day and played volleyball and rode the waves.  Although there were no whales this time, we did see a handfull of dolphins jumping in the distance.

I am back in Madison for the rest of April.  I will know what team I am on April 30.  One more month!  Until then, it is time for me to finish up with college.  I graduate Mat 15, so I have to finish all of my assignments for my online class by May 6.  I will try to not get too far behind.

What have you guys been up to?  What are we learning about now?  What are the spelling words this week?

I owe you all a HUGE thank you for the assembly.  It was really cool walking in there with everyone signing On Wisconsin.  And I thought the song that you performed for me was awesome.  Very creative!  Thanks again for a special day.

Only a little more than two months left of school.  The finish line is near!  Keep working hard.  My coach always tells our team that it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish that matters most.

P.S. I will use the Whoopie Cushion on Messy Moffitt this week!

#14 Playing Catch-Up

Mar 6, 2011   //   by Tolzien   //   Weekly Updates  //  Comments Off on #14 Playing Catch-Up

3/6/11

Hey Class,
The title of this update is “Playing Catch-Up”….and for good reason. Right now, this is what I am doing with my time outside of football. I am playing catch-up in my online class, and playing catch-up with you guys. My focus right now is on football because I only have a small window of time to best prepare myself for what I want to do next. It has been a dream of mine ever since I was sitting in the same seats as you all to be a professional athlete. Through a lot of hard work, committment, and perseverence, this is getting close to becoming a reality. That is if I can keep doing the same three things for the next year of my life. So for now, that is what I am spending the majority of my time doing.

East-West All-Star Game (Orlando, FL Jan. 23, 2011)

The past three days I have been doing tons of schoolwork to get caught up in my class. Since it is an online class, there are no due dates. I just have to make sure that ALL of my assignments are due by May 1st.  I think that it is important to tell you that playing “catch-up” is not a whole lot of fun…..so don’t do it!  It can easily be avoided if you stay on task and stay focused.  Playing catch-up only gives you unnecessary headaches and stress that you don’t need.

I sent you guys some updated videos that you should definitely check out on the “Videos” tab.  There is a video that I took standing in the middle of Rose Bowl stadium, one from our team plane headed to California, and another from the Badger Pep Rally on the beach of California.

Now….to answer all of your questions.  Most importantly, I want those Quality Coupons!  I got three A’s and one B last semester.  Now can I have some?  My favorite licorice are the red Twizzlers – does anybody else like those?   I agree, it is definitely frustrating being a Cubs fan.  But I still think that it will be that much sweeter when they win the World Championship THIS year.  About the whale that I saw in California….I was not able to get a picture because I forgot to bring my camera with me.  It did not slap its tail, but it did do a few belly flops and created so humoungous splashes.  Read more >>

First of all, how about those Packers!!  I have been a Packers fan ever since I was your age, so I love to give the Bears fans grief.

I heard all about the snow storm.  It even made the news out here in California.  I didn’t know that you had thunderstroms going on at the same time though.  That is really weird; I didn’t know that was possible.  Well, I ‘m jealous that you got a snow day out of it.  I don’t think I ever got a snow day in all of my years at Willow Bend.  If I had a snow day, I probably would have built a snow fort and had a snowball fight with my brothers.

#12 Winter? Not in California!

2/2/11

Let me take the time to re-introduce myself, my name is Scott Tolzien.  I am a senior at the University of Wisconsin studying Consumer Affairs.  I am 23 years old and grew up in Rolling Meadows, Illinois.

There, is that a good enough refresher?  I really need to apologize to you guys.  I know, it has been forever since I last “blogged” with you all.  In fact, I think it was sometime in mid December.  If Mrs. Grisaffe or Mrs. Mueller were grading this as an assignment, I probably would be getting a lower grade for lateness.  So, without saying more, I’m sorry.

The last 8 weeks have been a little bit out of the ordinary.  In December I was in Madison, New York City, Baltimore, and Los Angeles.  Since January 1, I have been in Los Angeles, Chicago, Madison, Boca Raton (Florida), Orlando, and now back out to California.  If you guys need a little geography lesson, find a globe and trace my airplane travels.

I was in Boca Raton training for a week and then Orlando for a week to play in a college football all-star game.  Since then, I have beeen out in California training 5 days a week for football.  Here is what a typical day is like for me on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: Read more >>

#11 Exam Week

Wow, that rap video is something!  You guys were awesome.  You must have been practicing for weeks now to learn all of those words.  I loved how you mentioned some of my teammates in there.  Hopefully it will fire them up to play well.  I also loved all the red Wisconsin gear that you all were sporting.  Messy Moffitt and Beardman also wanted me to tell you guys thanks for the nice note.  I have been calling them by their new nicknames now.

I have my big accounting final tomorrow night (Wednesday), so I have got to get back to studying.  Thanks again for your words of encouragement.  I will let you know how I did when I visit in January.

Speaking of that, I think this is the last time we will “blog” until my visit.  Thanks again for playing along. It has been a ton of fun.

Make sure to watch the Rose Bowl parade on the morning of January 1st to get ready for the big game.  Bucky and the Band will be there.  I think the game is on at 4 pm on ABC.  It should be a fun day.

See you all in January.  Can’t wait!  Have a good break.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Go Bucky,

Scott

Awards

I just wanted to let you guys know that my roommate, John “Messy” Moffitt, was named an All-American yesterday.  This means that he is THE BEST player at his position in the entire country.  Pretty cool!!

Also, my other roommate, Bill “Beardman” Nagy, was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection.  This means that he was one of the top players at his position in the Big Ten Conference.  Pretty cool!!

Both of these awards are very well-deserved.  John and Bill have both worked extremely hard to get where they are today.  It just goes to show you that if you work hard and always give your best effort, good things will happen to you!

Hey Class,

Can you find New York City and Baltimore?

Sorry it has been so long since the last update.  I was in New York City for a few days and then in Baltimore for another couple of days last week.  Does anybody know where these two cities are located?

It was a fun experience getting to go to both of these places.  I have never been to New York before, and all I can say is that it is HUGE!  I seriously think that you could place 10 Chicagos inside of New York City (Check out the video from the top of the Empire State Building).  While I was in New York, I got to see a Rockette’s show at Radio City Music Hall and got to visit the Empire State Building.  It was a memorable experience altogether.

The only bad part about being out of town last week is that I am now knee-deep in school work.  Right now I am in the middle of an intense game of catch-up.  The worst part is that we have final exams next week.  I had my fun last week, so now it is time to get back to work.  My home this week is going to be the library.
